This is the summary of a presentation I held at the International Institue for Communication and Development focussing on one particular aspect of my thesis. There, I analysed the online communication of an intercultural e-learning project which connects students around the world: The Global Teenager Project (GTP)
As a first blog entry, I am going to share what has kept me busy during the last six months. As it partly (see below why not completely) fits the mission to which I have dedicated this blog (critically reflecting the use of (computer) technology in various contexts around the world from a very subjective and personal point of view), I thought it was suitable as a stage-opener. As a start, you might want to scan the abstract:
This study analyses the nature of online communication and its position in the Global Teenager Project, a web-based intercultural learning initiative. It attempts to deduce development potentials for improving project participants’ experiences as well as to increase the extent to which pedagogical project goals are met. It further assesses students’ expectations and needs using two online surveys.
As a result, a considerable development potentials related to interactive student-to-student communication was detected. The author thus proposes and evaluates, after conducting a software requirements analysis, three community software alternatives which meet the specific needs of the project. The value of this study further lies in the analysis of habits of access and use of information and communication technologies, utilizing samples from 258 participants in 11 countries.
